There has been some tension between Johnny Rotten, also known as John Lydon, the former lead singer of Sex Pistols, and musician Billy Idol.

The band members have been touring without Johnny Rotten for a while. In a recent interview, he spoke about his role in giving the Sex Pistols an image and a voice.

Billy Idol responded with how he has been supportive of the other members of the band and their decision to tour without him and is aware of Rotten's outspoken nature. Although he understands how Johnny could be upset, he doesn't let it affect him. He said:

''He’s never held back what he truly thinks. So, yeah, it doesn’t bother me. I love him and everything, but I know where I’m going with my music and I’m happy with what I’m doing.”

Johnny Rotten is the former lead vocalist of Sex Pistols, with hits like God Save the Queen and Anarchy in the U.K. However, in 2024, the band members, including bassist Glen Matlock, guitarist Steve Jones, and drummer Paul Cook, reunited and decided to tour without Johnny.

They reformed the group with new vocalists like Billy Idol and Frank Carter to perform and did not invite Johnny Rotten. In an interview last month, Johnny expressed how he feels about the group performing with Frank Carter.

He said:

''I gave them the image. I was the frontman. I am the voice, what made the whole world sing. And now you’re going out, as they did the year before with Billy Idol. It’s just karaoke, really.”

Recently, in an interview with The Consequence, Billy Idol responded to the comment made by Johnny and also shared his thoughts on the band. He said:

“Well I think it’s fantastic that Jonesy, Cookie, and Glen wanna play. Johnny doesn’t wanna do it. He wants to do [his band] Public Image, so I totally understand that. What’s wrong with them finding some guy that they really believe can deliver those songs?”

He further said that Frank would be a great fit for the band and also mentioned that he is working on his music and is happy about it. He also made a statement regarding the comment Johnny Rotten had made. He said:

''And of course John’s gonna be pissed. He’s been like this for a while. At the same time, he’s into Public Image. That’s really what he wants to do, so I think we’re all in a good place, really.''

He continued:

''It’s just John’s always been super opinionated and rightly so, probably. He’s never held back what he truly thinks. So, yeah, it doesn’t bother me. I love him and everything, but I know where I’m going with my music and I’m happy with what I’m doing.''

Billy had performed with the members of Sex Pistols in the past as a part of a side project called Generation Sex in 2023. His new album, 'Still Dancing,' is set to be released on April 25, 2025.
