It has been nearly two decades since Jack Black last hosted Saturday Night Live. He returned on April 5, 2025.
Jack Black took to the SNL stage with a somersault, a live band, and a rock-style musical number. The School of Rock and Kung Fu Panda star opened the 50th season episode jokingly claiming he was quitting the gig mid-monologue due to stress. Then, he "revived" by the energy of rock 'n' roll, reports suggest.
Jack started his monologue, saying,
"You have no idea how much this means to me. I am back! I am hosting 'Saturday Night Live' for the fourth time. And for those of you who do not know, it has been 20 years since I've been on this stage. And honestly, it was an absolute life highlight."
He continued:
"And that is why it is so hard to say what I'm about to say, but I quit. I know — it is the first time a host has ever quit in the middle of the monologue, but that's kind of cool. It is the first time it's ever happened. But I can't do it. It's too stressful. And, frankly, I do not have the nerve."
As the riff from Aerosmith's Back in the Saddle rang out, Jack Black initiated his performance. What followed was a four-minute musical monologue. Take a look at his SNL monologue below:
Netizens react to Jack Black's 'SNL' performance
People were quick to weigh in on the comment section of the YouTube video to pen their thoughts over Jack's SNL comeback. Below are some of them had to share:
"Jack is one of the most complete entertainers in the business. He can sing, dance, act, tell jokes and generally get just about anyone who sees him to become engaged in whatever he is doing thru his outrageous presence on the stage. He is a legend and will hopefully continue to build on that for many more years to come.", penned a netizen.
"Jack Black is like the cool uncle you see at Christmas and just want to hang out with", opined another.
"SNL PLEASE do NOT wait 20 years again to have Jack Black back as host. He was fantastic through out the whole show, from monologue to sketches. The BEST!", expressed a third.
"20 years is insane. I'm happy to have been blessed with Jack Black in my childhood. From Brutal Legend to iCarly to Kung Fu Panda. Jack Black has always just been one of the few actors I know by name and not roles. Here's to another two decades and beyond (though hopefully there's less of a gap between the next time he hosts).", stated a fourth.
Fans also took to X (formerly Twitter) to chime in:
"Jack Black bringing that wild energy", declared an X user.
"This man has energy for days. He doesn’t do monologues, he performs them.", joked another.
"Jack Black's humor relies on nostalgia, blinding us to its lack of originality.", opined a third.
Jack Black last hosted SNL in 2005. Since then, he has made occasional appearances, but this was his first time returning as host in nearly 20 years.
