Garbage has officially dropped their latest track. On April 9, 2025, the alt-rock veterans unveiled There's No Future In Optimism, the lead single from their upcoming eighth studio album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, which is scheduled to be released on May 30, 2025.

The track drop was accompanied by a black-and-white video directed by Benjy Kirkman. As reports suggest, the song dives deep into themes of chaos, fear, and resistance, among others.

NME reports that in a statement, frontman Shirley Manson shared:

"This record is about what it means to be alive, and about what it means to face your imminent destruction. It is hopeful. It’s very tender towards what it means to be a human being. Our flaws and our failures are still beautiful, even though we’re taught that they’re not. This is a tender, thrilling record about the fragility of life."

Per Consequence, he continues:

"I love the title. But the lyrics are an action against that title. Because if we allow our fatalism or our negativity to really take over, we will crumble. It’s about a city, in my case, Los Angeles, but it could be anywhere where bad stuff is happening.
"After the George Floyd murder, which is one of few things in my life that I wish I’d never seen: I was changed entirely by seeing the footage of that cop kneeling on George Floyd’s neck. In Los Angeles there were huge protests and a lot of upheaval after that. Above our house in Hollywood, there were helicopters all day long, for days on end. It was precarious, chaotic and terrifying."

The song is Garbage's first new material since No Gods No Masters (2021). Take a look at the official music video of the band's There's No Future In Optimism below:

Fans of alt-rock music were quick to weigh in on the comment section of the official YouTube video as they shared their reactions regarding Garbage's new song. Below are what some of them had to remark:

"I love the characters in this clip. They are the shit. They rock! Once again Garbage blowing our minds away. 30 years following you guys. Hope it will be more.", declared a fan.
"Listening out on a walk and have it on repeat. I’m 42 years old but was over taken by the same happiness and excitement that my 16 year old self would’ve felt knowing new Garbage was coming out!!", expressed another.
"The first few seconds, I wasn't sure if this was Garbage the band. Then Shirley's voice cut in, so characteristic and consistent after so many years. More electronic, more current but unmistakably Garbage signature sound is still there.", penned a third.
"Couldn't love this more. Thanks Shirley, Butch, Steve, and Duke for continuing to build out the soundtrack of our lives - and for always making honest music which simultaneously inspires, provokes, and offers so much comfort.", commented a fourth.
