British vocalist and songwriter Bill Fay, known for hits such as The Healing Day, has passed away at the age of 81. Fay's professional life took several turns, with early albums not receiving much attention, decades of oblivion, and a resurgence in the later days.

His music has garnered a dedicated following over the years, and has inspired several musicians. His compositions dealt with issues of human life, nature, and spirituality. Wth Fay's demise, his dedication to folk music has once again come to light.


Bill Fay started his music career in the late 1960s but stepped away after limited success

Bill Fay was born in 1943 in London and started recording music in the late 1960s. He brought out his self-titled first album in 1970, and his second studio album, Time of the Last Persecution, in 1971.

While these albums were well received by critics, they did not help Fay achieve mass recognition. Due to this, he moved away from the music business and ceased announcing new material.

He did various jobs after releasing two albums, and wrote songs on a private level. Although he stayed out of the limelight, his early body of work progressively gained a small but devoted following.

His music was rediscovered in the 1990s, leading to new albums after decades of absence

Interest in Fay's early records started to happen by the 1990s, owing partly to support from artists like Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. In turn, there were reissues of his earlier recordings; which gave new fans access to his work.

Spurred by the fresh public interest, Fay went back to the studio after over 40 years and released Life Is People in 2012. The album, which included The Healing Day, was well received and made him popular among a new generation of fans.

He then came out with two other albums — Who Is the Sender? in 2015 and Countless Branches in 2020 — both of which had his distinctive introspective vein.

According to Billboard, the cause of Fay's death is yet to be officially known but he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease a while back.
