The feud between the Canadian rapper Drake and the music record label UMG (Universal Music Group) is gaining traction on social media as UMG has given a fiery response to the amended complaint Drake filed recently.
In the response, UMG stated that Drake's lawsuit against UMG was foolish and baseless. They concluded the statement with a warning, saying:
''Be careful what you wish for.''
For context, the amended complaint was centered around the diss track Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar being played at the Super Bowl halftime show. Drake alleged that the word 'pedophile' was censored during the performance, which proves that the song is defamatory.
UMG responds to Drake's amended complaint
In the amended complaint that Drake filed recently, he alleged that Kendrick's performance at the Super Bowl halftime show on the song Not Like Us, had the word 'certified pedophile,' censored since it's a family event and the listeners would also include children.
However, he further alleged that the song was defamatory, and he blamed UGM for orchestrating and promoting the song both at the Super Bowl, where the song got approximately 133.5 million views across all platforms, and at the Grammy Award Festival, where the song won Song and Record of the Year awards.
He also said that since he is associated with the label, they should have protected and supported him, instead, they released the defamatory diss track to boost Kendrick's career. Adding to it, he also said that the diss track has affected his image, reputation, and career.
To this amended complaint, UGM quickly gave a response, and in a statement given to TMZ, the company said that the lawsuit is misguided and is a baseless attack on artistic freedom. They further added that Drake's legal team is making him take one absurd decision after another.
The statement also mentions that two weeks ago, Drake requested the court to force Kendrick to submit his recording contract. They then said that if Drake keeps pushing this lawsuit, then he will also hand over private documents. They ended the statement by saying:
''As the old saying goes, ‘be careful what you wish for.''
They also added saying the lawsuits are an attack on an artists creative freedom. The statement reads:
''Both the Texas and New York proceedings are an affront to all artists and creative expression. Should his legal representatives senselessly keep the New York lawsuit alive, we will demonstrate that all remaining claims are without merit.''
The statement continues:
''It is shameful that these foolish and frivolous legal theatrics continue. They are reputationally and financially costly to Drake and have no chance of success.''
Since the lawsuit was filed in January, followed by the amended complaint to UMG's fiery responses, this feud is one of the most heated disputes in the hip-hop world.
