Saturday Night Live officially turned 50 on October 11, 2025, and to mark the celebrations it hosted the Saturday Night Live 50: The Homecoming concert at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

The anniversary special saw performances from Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard among other star-studded performances. The duo collaborated for the show to sing Nothing Compares 2 U.

The song was originally written by Prince for his band, The Family, and first appeared on their album, reportedly in 1985. It was then made famous by Sinead O’Connor during the 1990s. The song was one of the tracks on her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, according to a report by BBC.

In 1992, when Sinead O’Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live she staged a protest against the Catholic Church, tearing up the photo of Pope John Paul II which stirred up the controversy. She was eventually banned by NBC from the show for the rest of her life, as reported by Times magazine.
