Chanel, the French luxury brand, has announced the appointment of Matthieu Blazy as its new Artistic Director. With Blazy stepping into one of the most prestigious roles in the global fashion industry, this appointment is expected to start a new chapter for the brand.

Matthieu Blazy is a 40-year-old Fraench-Belgian designer. He is renowned for his craftsmanship and innovative designs. Blazy completed his graduation from La Cambre, a visual arts school in Brussels, and possesses a notable trajectory in the fashion industry.

Blazy worked at Raf Simons as a menswear designer before following Simons to Calvin Klein as Vice President of design. He gained couture experience at Maison Margiela, where he worked on the Artisanal line. He also contributed to Céline under Phoebe Philo.

In 2020, Blazy joined Bottega Veneta as design director. Later, he became the brand's creative director in 2021. Under his leadership, Bottega Veneta achieved notable acclamation and commercial success.

His trompe l’oeil designs transformed leather into materials like denim or flannel. It became a hallmark of his tenure at the brand.

What to Expect as Matthieu Blazy joins Chanel?

Blazy’s official tenure at Chanel begins in April 2025. His first runway collection is scheduled for October during the Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2026. Until then, the brand's studio team will continue to work on upcoming collections.

Blazy posted on Instagram to share the news of his joining Chanel. He captioned:

"CHANEL, I am thrilled and honoured to join the wonderful House of Chanel, I look forward to meeting all the teams and writing this new chapter together. Many thanks to Alain Wertheimer, Leena Nair and Bruno Pavlovsky for their trust ."

The new Artistic Director of Chanel also thanked his previous workplace. He took to Instagram again to remember his time at Bottega Veneta. With a bouquet of crochet flowers, his post was captioned:

"To the wonderful Bottega teams, thank you for the great adventure."

Industry insiders speculate that Blazy might reinterpret Chanel's classic elements: tweed, pearls, and quilted leather, with a modern, and experimental eye.

The luxury brand was founded by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in 1910. The brand's beloved collection ranges from tweed suits and quilted bags to Chanel No. 5 perfume, and more. Under Karl Lagerfeld's leadership from 1983 until his passing in 2019, Chanel expanded its global influence in the luxury fashion industry.

Virginie Viard succeeded Lagerfeld. He led the brand for five years before stepping down in mid-2024.

Taking the Artistic department at Chanel is a significant step for Blazy. The role requires overseeing ten collections annually, including ready-to-wear, haute couture, and specialty lines like Coco Beach and Métiers d’art.

The global fashion industry and enthusiasts now anticipate Blazy’s debut collection.
