Born out of a historic collaboration between Michael Jordan and Nike, the Air Jordan 4 is one of the most celebrated sneakers in the collection. The collection holds a special place in every sneakerhead's heart because it was the first that was released globally and was in line to see the "over moulded" mesh that became a signature Jordan style later on.

First released in 1989, the Nike Air Jordan 4 has lived up to its reputation in its 35 years of existence so far, having seen multiple collaborations and colorways over the years. This, as a result, has turned the AJ 4 into an icon of its own volition.

Another reason the Air Jordan 4 became a cultural classic was that it was one of the first pairs that brought together both communities, those who loved Nike on the court and those who loved the brand as a lifestyle choice.

In honor of this iconic pair, let's take a trip down memory lane and take a sneak peek into the BTS of the creation of the Air Jordan 4.

The Air Jordan 4 was heavily inspired by its predecessor, the Air Jordan 3

After the grand success of the Air Jordan 3, popular designer Tinker Hatfield revisited his sketchbook to cook up yet another masterpiece. Heavily inspired by the design of the Air Jordan 3, Hatfield ensured that the new design also sports a sleek mid-cut rise and signature visible Air that shrouds the midsole.

This naturally helps make transitions on the court feel cloud-like and smooth. The AJ4 has an advanced design, making it superior in terms of shock absorption.

There were also several upgrades to the new design, including the addition of a Duraback-coated upper and the iconic over-molded polyurethane mesh paneling, which makes the pair comfortable to wear.

The pair also sports plastic winged aglets for extra durability and Hatfield also devised 18 different ways in which people could lace their sneakers.

After the immaculate design came to life, it was first seen by the public on the feet of Michael Jordan himself during an All-Star game in 1989. Interestingly, it is also the first pair of Jordans to sport the Jumpman logo on the heel, which has now become a brand in itself.

Ever since the global release, the pair has been iconic in every sense of the word. Having seen many collaborations and colorways over the years, the Air Jordan 4s are still a sight for sore eyes in the memory of every sneakerhead all over the world.
