Gaming has long been a platform for connection. However, for players with disabilities, the design of standard controllers often creates barriers. Sony took a step forward towards inclusivity with the Access controller for PlayStation 5. It was released on December 6, 2023. This device is priced at $89.99.
The Access Controller by PlayStation is a customizable controller kit developed and designed in collaboration with the accessibility community. It offers flexibility in how players interact with their games.
It allows players to configure the controller to suit their mobility and preferences. The device's features are designed to give specially abled players an easy experience in gaming.
Delving into PlayStation's Access controller
The Access controller is sported with features that empower players to overcome physical challenges. Below is what the brand had to note during the launch of this device:
"Introducing the Access controller, a versatile controller kit that can be customised to meet players’ diverse needs, designed in close collaboration with the accessibility community to help players with disabilities play more comfortably for longer."
These controllers come with a customizable button layout. Players can swap out button caps to create a layout that fits their motion. It gives the ability to re-map commands. It helps to keep the essential actions within easy reach. PlayStation mentioned,
"Configure the Access controller's button layout to suit your range of mobility and switch between the included stick caps to find the shape and texture that works best for you."
Adjustable control sticks are another feature that is integrated into this device. Below is how PlayStation describes it:
"Lengthen or shorten the control stick’s extension arm, then lock it down at your ideal length for comfort and convenience."
Gamers can adjust stick sensitivity, and dead zone settings for good control according to their needs. The Access controller supports four 3.5 mm expansion ports. It allows players to connect additional devices such as trigger switches or specialty buttons. This feature is useful in integrating accessories like the Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit for better functionality.
The controller is designed to work from any 360° orientation. It can be used on flat surfaces, wheelchair trays, or mounted with the help of an AMPS pattern. This gives the players flexibility to position the controller wherever it is comfortable.
Players can also combine up to two Access controllers with a DualSense controller to form a single virtual controller. On the PS5, users can create and store up to 30 control profiles. They can switch between three saved configurations via a dedicated button.
Here is what the brand had to note on this:
"Use up to two Access controllers together as a single virtual controller, or combine one or two Access controllers with a DualSense™ or DualSense Edge™ wireless controller to add features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, motion sensor, and touch pad swipe to your setup."
It continues:
"Connect additional buttons, speciality trigger switches and other compatible accessories via the Access controller's four industry standard 3.5mm expansion ports, and configure their inputs via your PS5® console settings."
Traditional gaming controllers come with fixed button layouts, and limited adaptability, which are not beneficial for disabled players. The Access controller of PlayStation addresses these issues as an inclusive effort by Sony.
