The world of skincare products has been blessed with a plant-derived ingredient called Pentavitin. For those suffering from dry skin problems, this could be a savior. According to ThriveCo, this ingredient is a hydration hero that layers the skin with moisture, thereby locking the different layers.

It is also known as saccharide isomerate, an ingredient derived from plant sugars. The ingredient works similarly to the skin’s natural moisturizing factors (NMFs), contrary to common moisturizers like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. This helps contain moisture even after washing, thus preventing water loss from the skin.

In addition to that, Pentavitin helps to smooth and plum one’s skin over time. It can provide instant hydration for up to 72 hours. Some of the benefits of this ingredient include enhancing the skin’s metabolism, boosting collagen production, protecting the skin from oxidative damage, and making the skin healthier and softer.

Products like sunscreen gel, beard growth serum, hydrating gel, facial cleansers, face masks, and others often contain the ingredients. In an exclusive piece by Hypebae, Three Warriors founder Meagan Pate said:

“As a 100% plant-derived ingredient, it mimics what your skin naturally produces. Pentavitin binds to your skin and doesn’t just sit on the surface, meaning it won’t wash away easily. That’s what makes it so effective for long-term hydration and barrier protection.”

While retaining the skin’s moisture content, this ingredient also combats external damage, irritation, and dryness. However, Nurse Eric Nietzel has a few warnings about its usage. He said:

“I would advise against using it on areas of broken skin like cuts, scrapes or open acne wounds. Patch testing new products is a prudent way to introduce new elements into your routine without causing problems.”

How to use products containing Pentavitin?

According to Hypebae, many users find it beneficial to apply after retinol to minimize sensitivity and support overall skin health. Experts suggest using actives first, followed by the ingredient, to maximize their effectiveness while reducing potential irritation.

For best results, Pentavitin can be applied in the morning and evening on slightly damp skin. It also pairs well with other hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides for an added moisture boost. As mentioned, it helps the skin tolerate retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids by preventing dryness and protecting the skin barrier.

Herbar co-founders Oliveira and Rui Liu noted that hyaluronic acid only hydrates the skin surface. However, Pentavitin binds deeply to skin cells for long-lasting moisture and also outperforms glycerin and panthenol in retaining water.

They mentioned that while those ingredients attract moisture, they don’t hold it as effectively, leading to hydration loss over time. This plant-based ingredient, on the other hand, forms a strong bond with keratin, creating moisture.

Pate said Pentavitin pairs well with key skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid (HA) and retinol. It can counteract dryness or irritation caused by retinol. Combining it with glycerin, ceramides, or niacinamide enhances hydration even further.

It is advised to seek professional advice before using products containing this ingredient, as there can be side effects. In addition to that, users can take a patch test beforehand.
