Starbucks and McDonald's are synonymous with American fast food. 49 of 50 state capitals in the U.S. have McDonald's and Starbucks. Montpelier in Vermont is the only state capital in the U.S. that does not have either a Starbucks or McDonald's.

Additionally, the capital also doesn't have other food chains including, Burger King, KFC, Chick-fil-A, Sonic, Arby's, and Popeyes. However, if you ever find yourself in Montpelier and crave McD french fries or good-old Java Chip from Starbucks, you won't have to travel thousands of kilometers.

Due to their widespread popularity and affordability, fast-food chains are bound in the US. One can typically find a fast-food restaurant in the nook and corner of their city, including Starbucks and McDonald's. Montpelier in Vermont may be the only city capital without Starbucks and McDonald's, but the reasons may not surprise you as much.

The city capital has the lowest population density with only 7500 people. Additionally, being a small capital, the city prefers driving the economy for local businesses over large chains. However, you can take a 12-minute drive to the city of Barre to grab some fries and burgers from Burger King and McDonalds and a hot cup of coffee from Starbucks.

Owing to a small population, Montpelier in Vermont only promotes local businesses. If you find yourself in the city and are craving some fast food, you can drive to the nearest city and find most fast-food chains in Berre, except Taco Bell. While it is unclear, if there ever will be a fast-food restaurant in Montpelier, the citizens appear to be content with the local businesses.
