About Wendy's

Dave Thomas founded Wendy's in 1969 as a modest eatery that served square patties in a circular bun. The establishment quickly gained notoriety. After naming the restaurant after his fourth child, Thomas soon found that it was expanding quickly. In 1972, they signed their first franchisee, and by 1978, the business had opened its thousandth location. This was after the company's 1976 IPO and before its 1981 admission to the New York Stock Exchange.

The business continued to expand, and by the 1980s and 1990s, it had established chains in Italy, Germany, Korea, Greece, Turkey, and Guatemala. But after the company's 2008 merger with Triarc Companies Inc., things weren't all sunshine and roses. This resulted in a name change to Wendy's/Arby's Group, but three years later, the group sold most of its Arby's chains to Roark Capital Group, which brought about yet another change.

In the process, they changed the name to the Wendy's Company and then continued their expansion with restaurants opening in Argentina, the UK, and several other countries including Australia.
