Jordan Brand has responded to NFL fining Jalen Hurts for wearing “mismatched” Air Jordan 11 cleats that violated the league’s uniform.
The Nike subsidiary released a statement on social media: "We’re paying the fine. You can’t ban greatness." @ComplexSneakers shared the news on X (formerly Twitter).
Hurts was fined $5,628, as stated in a letter from the NFL, for sporting two shades - Midnight Green and Kelly Green.
The news was originally shared by NFL reporter @TomPelissero in a tweet that read,
“Two shoes, one fine: The NFL docked #Eagles QB Jalen Hurts $5,628 for violating the league’s uniform and equipment rules in Sunday’s win over Pittsburgh, per source. Officially, Hurts’ fine was for wearing a shoe color that’s not one of the Eagles’ “Constitutional team colors”.”
According to the NFL’s rule: “A player may wear shoes that are black, white, or any Constitutional team color, or any combination of black, white, and a Constitutional team color.”
However, this wasn’t the first time Hurts wore different sneakers in a game. ABC News reported that on October 28, during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he was forced to wear mismatched cleats when one of his green Air Jordan 4 PEs came off while running down the sideline. He had to change to a white Jordan 11.
Does Jalen Hurts have to pay the fine?
According to a report by Nick DePaula, Hurts won’t have to pay the fine since Jordan Brand has covered it.
He took to X to share the information through a tweet, reflecting upon the Michael Jordan incident 40 years ago. He wrote:
“40 Years Apart: Jalen Hurts receives “banned” letter from NFL after wearing Air Jordans in violation of league’s uniform policy. He will be fined $5,628. “We’re paying the fine,” Jordan Brand tells me. “You can’t ban greatness.” Fine comes 40 years after Michael Jordan’s black & red shoes were banned by the NBA.”
Which other player was fined by the NBA?
The NBA fined Michael Jordan for wearing the classic Air Jordan 1 sneakers as he violated the league’s uniform rule. The rule stated that players are required to wear footwear, which is at least 51% white.
Jalen Hurts reportedly joined Jordan Brand in August 2023. The brand made the announcement on social media through a series of posts that featured the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback. Cam Jordan, Bryce Young, Bobby Wagner, Jamal Adams, and Dak Prescott are other athletes who had earlier signed a sponsorship deal with the brand.
By supporting Hurts, Jordan Brand once again proved that it values the ethos of the brand, which are individuality, self-expression, and greatness.
