According to a report in Testing Table, the first Trader Joe opened in 1967 by Joe Coulombe. The name takes its inspiration from Trader Vic’s, a tikki bar restaurant started in California.

Coulombe owned a chain of convenience stores before Trader Joe's. He initially opened up a Pronto Market in 1958. But in the 1960s, Coulombe discovered that Pronto Markets were struggling and on the verge of shutting down.

During his vacation in the Caribbean, he was motivated to open a grocery store with hard-to-find products in the market. In 1967, Joe opened a grocery chain to appeal to a growing number of well-educated customers. Thus, Trade Joe was born.
