More details on the idea behind the Lil Wayne x Cetaphil ad for the Super Bowl LIX
In September 2024, the NFL announced that Kendrick Lamar would be the main performing act at the 2025 Apple Music Halftime show for Super Bowl LIX. Lamar released a YouTube video with the caption:
"What the deal, everybody? My name is Kendrick Lamar, and I’ll be performing at Super Bowl 59,” he said. “Will you be pulling up? I hope so. You know there’s only one opportunity to win a championship. No round twos. Let’s get it. I wouldn't want you to miss it. Meet me in New Orleans. February 9, 2025.”
Controversy followed the news as industry heavyweights like Cam’ron and Nicki Minaj and some fans believed that Lil Wayne, a New Orleans native, should have been named the headlining act instead.
Wayne admitted that he was disappointed to have not been given the role in an Instagram Live in September 2024:
"I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown and for just automatically mentally putting myself in that position. I thought there was nothing better than that spot, that stage, that platform, in my city. So it hurt, it hurt a whole lot."
The rapper appeared on The Skip Bayless show in December 2024, where he clarified that there was no bad blood between him and Lamar and also revealed that he had spoken to Lamar and congratulated him on the feat.
"I’ve spoken to him, and I wished him all the best, and I told him he better kill it. You better kill it. You got to kill it."
The Cetaphil ad seemingly references the Super Bowl performance snub with its title and the opening sequence of Lil Wayne receiving “disappointing news.”
Lil Wayne’s Carter VI album will launch in June 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
