Björk on her musical journey and artistic expression

The musician sat down for an interview with The Guardian’s Rebecca Nicholson and talked about her Cornucopia tour, her musical journey, and bold fashion, amongst other things. Björk has released 10 albums as an adult solo artist and described her body of work as a documentary of all the aspects of her life—both the good and difficult:

“I have shared my shadows and my darkness, for sure. I feel like I have been quite truthful with the dark things and self-pity and things like this. But I have also tried to document the more optimistic or the playful side of my character. And music is about celebration.”

She described Fungal City, a song on her most recent album, Fossora, as about “vibrant optimism.” When asked if she had a positive outlook on life, she replied positively, adding that optimists have shadows, too.

Her most recent tour, Cornucopia, concluded in 2023 and is set to return as a concert film and art book. Cornucopia lasted five years and saw the release of two of the singer’s albums.

Fans will remember the tour for its immersive visuals and awe-inspiring stage setup. She described the tour as one of the most flamboyant things she had ever done:

“I basically went to Derek [Birkett], my manager, and said, ‘Listen, I’m going to do digital theatre and it’s going to be the most over-the-top, flamboyant thing I will ever do, and I’ll probably only do it once."

With the tour concluded, Björk revealed that she would focus on more flexible and simple projects.
