The recent reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 design has sparked debate among users on social media. The gaming device, whose first look was released on January 16, 2025, by the company on its YouTube channel, resembles a lot like the original model but has few distinct features.
According to a report in Business Insider, the Switch 2 includes a display that is “sandwiched between two removable Joy-Con controllers.” It featured a larger display (rumored to be 8.4-inch) than the original Switch, which had a 6.2-inch screen.
However, the magnetically attached Joy-Con controllers have faced backlash from the netizens. The Joy-Con connection sticks out slightly from the console, which raises alarms regarding its durability. Many believe that it might lead to bending or cracking, as kids might mishandle them.
The latest design has left the social media community in splits. While some are excited about the potentially new features others are let down by the lack of originality. The design has been described as “lackluster” by various users who hoped for a more distinct model.
How the netizens react to the Nintendo Switch 2’s design?
People on the internet have given a mixed reaction to the launch of Nintendo 2. While some have appreciated its latest features, others have questioned its durability.
"I been said the new switch is a major let down. Why do companies farm revenue by giving you the same product with just a rebranding? We need to stop supporting products like this, it’s either u give us something good or dont even bother." A user wrote.
“No debate. Looks flawed. I can just imagine kids breaking this the first day. Lines at retailers for returns will be crazy.” Another user added.
“A 1080p LCD screen in 2025 is a horrible joke, btw.” One user mentioned in a tweet.
“This is a failing point. Hold it to the side it will fall, being a little rough with it, it's gonna snap with some broken pins. Stick drift is a given. I wonder how much the new joy-cons are gonna be if it breaks on you” One user added.
This is not the first time Nintendo has faced such problems. Similar issues were faced by gaming enthusiasts on using the first Switch. A handful of users believed in Nintendo’s design and were positive about its brand-new features.
“What we've seen over the years is Nintendo consoles are VERY sturdy. So I'm not worried about anything for the Switch 2.” A person commented.
“Its Nintendo. It’s literally gonna be durable. I don’t get why people are complaining.” Another person added.
“I'm sure its not that vulnerable as it might have gone through hundreds of stress testing.” A user wrote.
“Let’s see how it plays out!” Another added.
According to a report in Dexerto, Nintendo Switch 2 features a backward compatibility which means you will be able to play games like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The first-look trailer by Nintendo also teased a Mario Kart game which would support 24-player races. However, Nintendo hasn’t listed the official release date or pricing yet.
