Nintendo has officially announced the release of a Lego Game Boy. It is scheduled to drop in October 2025. This collaboration between two globally beloved brands, Nintendo and Lego, has left fans of gaming and building block enthusiasts buzzing.
The announcement was made through a teaser shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The video was dropped on the X handle of Nintendo of America. It featured a handful of Lego Game Boy bricks. It included the famous purple buttons, a directional pad, and the gray casing. However, the finished product has not been fully revealed yet. Take a look at the teaser:
The teaser stirred excitement among several fans, while another group of Nintendo enthusiasts shared disappointment, as they have been in anticipation of Nintendo Switch 2 for long. A fan jokingly commented on the post,
"Announce Switch 2 or granny stays in the cage."
Others also weighed in on the post to share their thoughts regarding the Lego Game Boy teaser. Below are what some of them had to comment:
"I can see this being extremely expensive", declared a gamer.
"TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!", noted another.
"This is the reveal everyone was waiting for. Unironically super cool though.", lauded a third hinting at Nintendo Switch 2.
"Announcing a Lego console instead of the Switch 2 is crazy", joked a fourth.
"This is going to be so perfect for my Nintendo themed collection!", shared a collector.
What to expect from the Lego Game Boy?
Here is what has been confirmed by the brand so far:
- Release Date: October 2025
- Design Inspiration: The original 1989 Game Boy model
- Teased Features: Purple face buttons, a black D-pad, and bricks replicating the Game Boy’s famous casing
Based on the size of the bricks shown, the Lego version of Nintendo's Game Boy might be a life-size replica of the original handheld console. However, finer details like the number of bricks, interactive features, price, and more remain under wraps.
Nevertheless, given that the LEGO NES retailed at a premium price, the Game Boy could follow the same pricing. Fans are also eager to see if the set includes any bonus features, such as buildable cartridges or a display stand.
Nintendo and Lego’s past collaborations have seen widespread acclamation around the globe. The LEGO NES, for instance, included a retro TV model with a scrolling Mario game. On the other hand, the Super Mario-themed sets offered interactive features for younger gamers.
It is unclear if Game Boy's Lego edition will include any electronic or interactive components. However, its design seems relatively geared more toward adult collectors than children. The teaser depicts a focus on visual appeal rather than playability, making it more of a collector's item.
More on Nintendo x LEGO
Nintendo was founded in 1889 as a playing card company. From the early days of the Game Boy in 1989 to modern consoles like the Nintendo Switch, it has now grown into a household name in the gaming industry worldwide.
On the other hand, LEGO has been a beloved creative play brand since 1932. The duo's ongoing collaboration has brought sets based on Super Mario, Mario Kart, and a Lego Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
The upcoming Nintendo x Lego Game Boy is going to be the next addition to this series of gaming-inspired builds.
