Nike is one of the most sought-after brands in the world of sneakers. Whether it is Air Jordans or Air Force, buyers often find themselves at a crossroads when it comes to purchasing the right pair. The company has reintroduced its classic Shox recently, the first model of which was launched in 2000.
However, the upcoming addition to this lineup is the Nike Shox R4 “Sail” which will likely be released by Spring/Summer 2025. Sneaker News gave a first glimpse of the shoe describing the new design as having a classic feel, similar to the White and Silver colorway.
The media company noted that instead of matte gray, Nike opted for a soft cream shade that runs from the toe to the heel, giving the shoe a more refined look. The embossed plating adds depth, while white leather accents appear on the collar, ankle, and toe cap.
Another notable feature is the Bright Crimson Shox cushion columns at the heel, providing both style and visible tech appeal. This shoe is expected to be available on nike.com with a tentative price of $150.
According to NSS Magazine, the history of Shox goes back to 1984 when designer Bruce Kilgore, came up with an idea. Instead of using air cushions, which were already a signature cushioning technology, he envisioned a mechanical cushioning system for sneakers.
The design was heavily influenced by futuristic, space-age concepts, with the team drawing inspiration from astronaut gear and space suits. The pistons in the shoe were modeled after the round rocket boosters of space shuttles. Early prototypes looked quite different from the final Shox design, resembling the suspension fork of a mountain bike.
Here is what reviewers said about the previous Nike Shox R4 designs
The Shox R4 has a bold and edgy design and NSS Magazine noted that in Italy, the shoe initially gained popularity among bodybuilders in gyms, as its piston-like cushioning system was believed to provide support for heavy lifting.
Beyond that, it also became a statement piece for those looking for an alternative to Air Max 97. Nike’s Shox R4 reportedly resonated with individuals who wanted to stand out from the crowd. YouTube channel Julian’s Reviews! posted a review of the Shox R4 in September 2024, saying:
“As you can see, for this upper, we are going to have a mix of a few materials, of course most of them will be synthetic but nevertheless this one still looks quite good so as you can see for both medial and lateral side, we are going to have this silver material which will have fluid ripples and laser perforations which will take inspiration from space suits and other astronaut gears.”
Regarding this model, Nike noted that it brought back the Shox R4 with a design that stays true to its early 2000s roots. The shoe features the same sleek, futuristic look and responsive cushioning as the original.
The signature Shox columns in the heel help evenly distribute weight for better comfort while also giving the sneaker a bold, street-ready style.
