Since their collaboration began in 2003, Kobe, Nike, and designer Eric Avar have focused on advancing basketball footwear performance and technology.

Kobe said that he drew inspiration for the sneakers from boxers.

But before the release of the 9, the trio concentrated on creating lightweight, low-cut shoes that resembled soccer cleats. Kobe recognized the performance potential of the low-cut design, which was unconventional for basketball shoes, and felt that it complimented his playing style.
