Nike is reportedly reworking one of its most beloved sneakers, the Air Force 1, with the "Black Gum" colorway, a new take tailored for skateboarding.
According to Sneaker Bar Detroit, the Nike Air Force 1 SK8 “Black Gum” sneakers are set to release in Summer 2025, with a retail price point of around $120. This model will not come as a part of the official Nike SB (Skateboarding) line but is expected to feature subtle enhancements that cater to skaters. On release, enthusiasts can find the pair on the official Nike website, SNKRS app, and select retail locations.
With a speculated sleek black leather and suede upper, contrasting white Swooshes and laces, and a grippy gum outsole, the “Black Gum” edition is expected to be dressed in a balanced look.
It does not have full SB technology. However, extra padding in key areas might allow comfortable support and fit for skaters and other wearers. The upcoming shoes can be positioned as a skate-specific alternative to standard Air Force 1s.

Reported design elements and features of the Nike AThe ir Force 1 SK8 “Black Gum” sneakers
The Colorway of these upcoming shoes is labeled Black/ White-Gum Light Brown, Sneaker Bar Detroit reports. Also, the Nike AF1 SK8 “Black Gum” allegedly retains the traditional AF1 structure while incorporating other key elements, that include:
- Upper: The shoe features a black leather base with suede overlays. The combination of materials is expected to give the upcoming shoes a slightly premium feel.
- Nike Swoosh and branding: A white leather Swoosh has been featured. It contrasts against the black upper. Branding details, such as the Nike Air logo on the heel, tongue tag, and insoles are some specs that maintain the traditional AF1 look.
- Padding and comfort: Unlike regular AF1s, this model reportedly includes extra padding on the tongue and collar, a feature that is often found in skateboarding shoes. This added cushioning is expected to offer comfort to the wearer.
- Outsole: The gum rubber sole is expected to provide better traction compared to a standard AF1, with better grip necessary for skateboarding. The Black/ Gum colorway also gives the overall look of the Air Force 1 SK8 “Black Gum” a streetwear-friendly aesthetic.
While these changes are expected to make the AF1 SK8 a skate-friendly iteration, it is important to note that it lacks the specialized cushioning found in Nike SB Dunks. This makes it more of a lifestyle sneaker with skateboarding influences rather than a dedicated skate shoe.
Additionally, AF1s generally have a chunkier build, which may not appeal to all skaters. Nike presents the Air Force 1 model on its official website, stating:
"The radiance lives on in the Nike Air Force 1 ’07, the b-ball icon that puts a fresh spin on what you know best: crisp leather, bold colors and the perfect amount of flash to make you shine."
It also adds:
"Debuting in 1982, the AF1 was the first basketball shoe to house Nike Air, revolutionizing the game while rapidly gaining traction around the world. Today, the Air Force 1 stays true to its roots with the same soft and springy cushioning that changed sneaker history."
