Created in collaboration with stylist and designer Dex Robinson, this sneaker is part of Nike’s Yardrunners series. The Yardrunners program highlights the contributions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through custom footwear designs.

Robinson, who is an alumnus of Virginia Union University (VUU), has crafted a sneaker that pays tribute to his school, drawing inspiration from its panther mascot and its 160th anniversary. Set to release at select retailers like DTLR for $120, this release will be a unique blend of style and cultural homage.

Traits of the Nike Air Force 1 Low “VUU Panthers” sneaker

The Nike Air Force 1 Low “VUU Panthers” takes a distinctive approach to materials and design. The most notable feature is the use of faux black pony hair, which mimics the fierce appearance of Nike Air Force VUU’s panther mascot. This exclusive material sets the sneaker apart, giving it a coarse, lively look.

The design also comprises an iridescent border around the classic Nike Swoosh, enhancing the sneakers' visual appeal with a touch of color-shifting shine. Additionally, the tongue and back are made from pebbled leather, presenting both texture and durability.

The design praises Virginia Union University’s 160th anniversary

The Air Force 1 Low “VUU Panthers” rejoice in the university’s mascot as well as mark a significant milestone for Virginia Union University, its 160th anniversary. In honor of this occasion, Robinson comprises numerous custom details, like black and red rope laces that highlight the school’s colors.

The shoe also features metal dubraes, which add a refined touch to the design. Semi-translucent gum soles complete the look, presenting a modern twist on a classic sneaker while preserving its connection to the Air Force 1 heritage.

The Nike Air Force 1 Low “VUU Panthers” sneaker, launching on December 18th, syndicates style, culture, and a commemoration of history. Designed by Dex Robinson, this drop honors both his alma mater, Virginia Union University, and the broader tradition of HBCUs through Nike’s Yardrunners initiative.

While the drop will be available for $120 at select retailers like DTLR, Nike SNKRS fans will need to wait for any updates on a potential online drop. With its bold use of materials and thoughtful design elements, this sneaker will make waves among sneakerheads as well as alumni.
