The frozen chicken nuggets at Wegmans, a supermarket chain, were recalled by the store on January 24, 2025. However, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the USDA issued a public health alert on its website on January 27, 2025, notifying the recall and citing contamination as the reason.
The product in question is Wegmans’ frozen and fully cooked breaded chicken nuggets, which might contain extraneous materials like bone fragments. The public health alert was issued to caution customers about consuming the product, which is minimally processed and contains no harmful ingredients, as seen on its packaging.
Wegmans produced the frozen chicken nuggets on August 26, 2024, and customers can identify the product from its orangish packaging, UPC Bar Code 0-77890-25210-9, and establishment number P-33944. The nuggets were sold in 46-oz. packages with a Best Buy Date of August 26, 2025. Customers can check the date on the lower right corner of the package’s backside.
According to FSIS’s notice, the agency learned about the problem after Wegmans received several customer complaints about bone fragments in the frozen, fully cooked breaded chicken nuggets. However, no injuries have been reported so far, but anyone worried about a possible injury should seek medical advice.
The food product was distributed in North Carolina, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and New York. FSIS mentioned that the product is no longer available for purchase at the stores.
The supermarket chain has announced that it would provide a full refund upon returning the product. Nonetheless, buyers can reach out to Wegmans at 1-855-934-3663, adhering to the timings.
Wegmans had also recalled its chicken food items previously
In 2023, Federal Health Inspectors issued an alert for Wegmans’ Jamaican Jerk Style Chicken Breast cutlets concerning allergens that were not labeled on the packaging. The product contained milk, soy, and milk but was not labeled accordingly.
The same year, in St. Patrick’s State, the supermarket chain flagged two kinds of frozen nuggets as they contained inedible material. Inspection revealed that chunks of wood were mixed with the nuggets produced by the “Impossible” brand.
Similarly, in 2022, salmonella contamination in leafy salads led to a recall of products like organic baby kale and baby spinach with sweet pea leaves. The farming operation behind the processing, Bio 365, mentioned the dirt being present in the soil used for the produce.
Wegman also issued a recall of citrus fruits sold at its outlets because of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The supermarket chain also advised customers to return the fruits for a refund.
Previously, four varieties of raw chicken had to be removed from the shelves in 2016 as the grocery retailer allegedly processed the poultry without a safety inspection by the USDA. It then sent the pre-seasoned meat to the stores without getting approval. As a result of this recall, over 1000 pounds of meat were disposed of.
In 2012, 31,000 pounds of spinach had to be let go of by the retailer after it was found that the vegetable was tainted with E. Coli.
