The FDA has released an update about a previous recall of Costco's Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon.
The recall, first announced in October of last year, is now classified as Class I, the organization's highest danger rating, which indicates a very high chance of mortality.
The new update
Following laboratory testing that revealed Listeria Monocitogenes on October 21, 2024, 111 boxes of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon in twin 12-ounce packaging were recalled last year.
People who have no underlying medical concerns may only experience transient symptoms, including diarrhea, stiffness, nausea, high fever, and severe headaches, according to the Food and Drug Administration's website. However, pregnant women who have listeria infection may experience stillbirths and miscarriages.
Consumers were asked to beware of the goods bearing lot number 8512801270 that were bought between October 9 and October 13, 2024.
However, there are assumptions that some buyers could have frozen the salmon for later use, even though the recalled product is no longer available. Customers should look for the recalled food in their freezers.
According to Newsweek, the product was marketed at select establishments in the southern United States and distributed in Florida.
The manufacturer, Acme Smoked Fish Corp., says customers can return the item to Costco and get a complete refund.
What to keep an eye out for
Customers are urged to be aware of the signs of listeriosis, often known as listeria infection, because of the alarming increase in recalls due to concerns.
The condition can be identified by fever, flu-like symptoms, headache, stiff neck, and disorientation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Diarrhea and vomiting are signs to look out for in people with intestinal listeria infections.

According to the CDC, if you have a fever and other signs of listeriosis and you have consumed food that has been recalled or connected to an epidemic, you should speak with your doctor.
What is Listeria monocytogenes?
A foodborne bacterial infection, listeria, may be extremely dangerous for pregnant women, elderly individuals, and others with compromised immune systems.
Listeria infections seldom cause illness in healthy adults, but they can be fatal to infants and those with compromised immune systems.
The consequences could be lessened with prompt antibiotic therapy.
Listeria bacteria are immune to freezing and refrigeration. Therefore, those more susceptible to severe illnesses should refrain from consuming foods most likely to contain the LM germs.
Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes
In the event that you contract listeria, you may have:
- Fever
- Chills
- Muscle aches
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
The earliest signs and symptoms of illness may appear a few days after consuming infected food, but they may not appear for at least 30 days.
The following symptoms may appear if the listeria infection advances to your nerve system:
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Confusion or changes in alertness
- Loss of balance
- Convulsions
An infection during pregnancy is probably only going to create minor symptoms for the mother.
However, the effects on the unborn child can be catastrophic; the child may die in the pregnancy or get a potentially fatal illness within a few days after birth.
Although they might be modest, a newborn's infection symptoms can include:
- Little interest in feeding
- Irritability
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Breathing difficulties
Get in touch with your physician if you experience diarrhea, nausea, muscular pains, or a fever.
Seek emergency attention if you have a high temperature, a bad headache, a stiff neck, disorientation, or light sensitivity.
