FDA has announced a recall for Lay’s Classic Potato Chips on December 16, 2024, that may contain an undeclared milk allergen. Approximately 6,344 bags of 13-ounce potato chips distributed in Oregon and Washington may be affected because of the recall.
The potato chips were available in the market from November 3, 2024, and contain a “Guaranteed Fresh” date reading “11 FEB 2025”, and a manufacturing code of either 6462307xx or 6463307xx.
The FDA has urged consumers to discard any such bags of recalled Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. Frito Lay said that those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk are at risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the chips.
The press release by the company added that the recall was initiated after they received a consumer complaint regarding the potential allergen in the Party Size Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. However, no allergic reactions have been reported to this date, according to the company. It further stated that no other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes, or variety packs are recalled.
Precautions to take if you bought the recalled chips
FDA has advised consumers to discard the recalled Lay’s Classic Potato Chips or return them to the retail store for a refund.
In case you have consumed the chips, you must note the signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing or swelling, and seek medical attention immediately.
If you are not allergic or sensitive to milk, you can consume the product safely.
Other products that were recalled before Frito Lay’s Classic Potato Chips
In November 2024, Costco recalled nearly 80,000 pounds of Kirkland Signature Butter as the packaging did not include the ingredient as milk. It said the labeling issue posed a high risk for consumers who are allergic to milk.
The Kirkland products that were particularly affected included: 46,800 pounds of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and 32,400 pounds of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter.
In October 2024, the FDA recalled more than 233,000 bottles of an antidepressant, duloxetine due to the presence of a cancer-causing chemical known as N-nitroso-duloxetine.
The FDA stated that nitrosamine impurities "may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels and over long periods of time." However, it gave a clarification indicating that anyone taking a drug that contains nitrosamines at-or-below the acceptable daily intake limits daily for 70 years is "not expected to have an increased risk of cancer." Besides Frito Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, several other products were recalled by the FDA in December 2024, include: SugarLin Herbal Formula Herbal Dietary Supplement (drugs) on December 18, Force Forever (dietary supplement) on December 16, Cal Yee's, Cal Yee Farm, Boa Vista Orchards (Nuts and snacks products) on December 14, Connie’s (Thin Crust cheese frozen pizza, 20.36 oz) on December 13 and Daily Veggies (Enoki Mushrooms) on December 12, according to a press release by FDA.
