Several Brie and Camembert cheeses sold in Aldi's and other stores across several states have been recalled over concerns of potential listeria. Savencia Cheese USA stated on Saturday. It mentioned six different kinds of cheeses produced in the company's Lena, Illinois, facility.

The FDA also issued a voluntary recall, citing the following:

"Savencia Cheese USA is recalling select soft ripened cheeses manufactured in our Lena manufacturing facility because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."

Several grocery stores have been hit with the recall, including Aldi and Market Basket, both of which have outlets in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. However, according to the U.S. FDA, the recalled products only had "limited regional distribution."

All recalled products listed a "best buy date" of December 24, 2024, and were manufactured between September 30 and October 15, 2024.

According to Fox News, the FDA's statement revealed that the "finished product testing" failed to identify any contaminated product, but a voluntary recall was initiated nonetheless should any cheeses sold at the store be polluted.

The following cheeses were listed in the notice:

  • Aldi Emporium Selection Brie, 12/8 ounce Brie
  • La Bonne Vie Brie, 6/8 ounce
  • La Bonne Vie Camembert, 6/8 ounce
  • Industrial Brie 12/8 ounce
  • Market Basket Brie 6/8 ounce
  • Supreme Oval 7-ounce, 6/7 ounce

The affected states are Indiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, Iowa, New Jersey, California, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, and Illinois.

In a statement by Aldi, the company asserted it "puts the safety and integrity of the products it sells first."

"If customers have products affected by this recall, they are advised to discard it immediately or return it to their local store for a full refund."

The FDA announcement further reads:

"The few retailers that received the product have been informed of this possible contamination and are in the process of removing products from shelves. Consumers that have any of the recalled products listed in the table above should refrain from consuming them and return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.

Listeria, also known as Listeriosis, is a grave infection caused by ingesting food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This bug can withstand refrigeration and other preservatives, but it is typically found in unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses.

It is important to note that most people who ingest the bug will not fall seriously ill. However, in extreme cases, it can lead to confusion and seizures, miscarriages in pregnant women, and can even prove fatal.

According to the official FDA notice, there have been no confirmed reports of a Listeria outbreak due to consumption of the contaminated products.
