Lately, there has been a lot of news about various food items facing a recall from the markets. The latest to join the list are 2 million donuts that have been recalled from the market by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), amidst allegations of Listeria contamination.

This has raised questions in people's minds, especially about the brands that are under fire with the recalls, and much more. For now, the main brands that have been asked to recall their donuts include Walmart, and Dunkin' Donuts, apart from other grocery store donuts.

According to Forbes, the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the donuts can give rise to listeriosis. The recall has been categorized as a Class II recall, meaning those infected can get better with some medication. Listeriosis can particularly be harmful for those who are aged, pregnant, or have a weakened immunity system, according to the official website of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

What does a Recall mean? Details explored

A recall can usually be issued by the FDA. When a recall is issued against a particular food item, it indicates a potential risk of contamination in the item that could lead to a health risk.

The FDA outlines on its website that a recall can be issued for various reasons:

A food may be recalled because of contamination with disease causing microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites; the presence of foreign objects such as broken glass or fragments of metal or plastic; or failure to list a major allergen in the food, such as peanuts or shellfish, on the product label.

The FDA is also authorized to recall food items from the market in case of failure to mark common allergens like peanuts or shellfish on the product label, which could be a potential health hazard for those who consume the items.

It is important that people be aware of items that are recalled by the FDA, since consumption of these items can lead to health risks. While the FDA is the official government body that is authorized to issue recalls, manufacturers and distributors can also have the authority to recall products from the market in case of non-compliance. In some instances, the non-compliance can also be rectified and the food items can make their way back to the marketplace.
