When you hear the word 'croissant', you immediately think of the French. What if we told you that croissants are actually an Austrian pastry? The origin of croissants dates back a few centuries ago, specifically in the 13th century. Back in Austria, they made kipferl, which is a flaky crescent-shaped pastry. In fact, the name of the widely loved puff pastry is derived from its very shape.

How did we come to associate croissants with the French? Over the years, French bakers during the 19th and 20th centuries developed croissants into what we know them today.

However, croissants are not only limited to France but are enjoyed by everyone in different parts of the world. Keep reading to know what croissants are called in different countries and what deals you can explore on National Croissant Day 2025.

Different ways to say 'Croissant' all around the world

The name of everyone's favorite breakfast pastry comes from Austria. It is known as kipferl.

The Portuguese and the French both share the same name for the flaky pastry. It is called a croissant in Portugal as well. Additionally, the Spanish name for croissant is very similar to the Portuguese and French names. In Spain, it is called a 'cruasán'.

In Italy, a croissant is known as a 'cornetto'. This name is derived from the horn shape of the pastry. In Italian, cornetto translates to 'little horn'. Similarly, in Germany, it is given a name based on its shape. It is called a 'hornchen'.
