Pop star Selena Gomez and her partner, music producer Benny Blanco took the world by shock when they announced their engagement through an Instagram post.

While fans and celebrities alike flooded the post to congratulate the couple, fans could not help but notice the mesmerizing ring Blanco had used to propose to the Wizards of Waverly Place star.

The ring features a roughly 8-carat marquise cut diamond on a gold paved band. According to many prominent jewelers, the ring is extremely rare as marquise cut diamonds are rare to find, especially in that huge a size. The ring is also estimated to be worth approximately $250,000.

Ann Grimmett, VP of Merchandising at Jared Jewelers, expressed her opinion on this with Page Six Style and said,

"Selena Gomez’s engagement ring is fitting for a talent as rare as hers, given less than five percent of diamonds are marquise. The shape represents that what’s old is new again, with a history dating back to the 18th century, but also represents the trend to elongated fancies that we have seen growing rapidly over the past few years."

Additionally, Mike Freid, CEO of Diamond Pro told Page Six Style,

“A high-quality marquise diamond in this carat weight is very rare, thus creating an enormous price tag. This ring shows that Selena has a strong sense of her own style, and doesn’t mind bending from the norm.”

However, aside from the obvious bomb that Blanco must have spent on the ring, there is a sweet meaning hidden behind his choice, and fans were quick to spot it.

According to many fans on Twitter, the choice of a marquise diamond was a nod to Gomez's 2015 hit, Good For You. The lyrics of the song that are being spoken about here are as follows,

"I’m on my marquise diamonds / I’m a marquise diamond/ Could even make that Tiffany jealous."

Aside from the sweet reference to Selena Gomez's song, the marquise diamond is also considered to be a symbol of devotion dating back to the 18th century. This is because King Louis XV commissioned a stone to be crafted in the shape of his lover Marquise de Pompadour’s lips.

With stories of such love and devotion attached to the ring, both personal and historical, Benny Blanco may have raised the standard of proposals and left fans of the Rare Beauty founder feeling warm and fuzzy.

Although the exact jeweler who crafted Gomez's ring is still a secret, it is speculated that Blanco spent upwards of $225,000 on the diamond ring.
