The internet is flooded with content. Often some of this content piques the interest of social media users and gets viral as everyone rushes to recreate their version of the trend. One such trend that has recently been going viral is the ‘dry yogurt’ trend.

Many users have been sharing their recipes inspired by the yogurt. The process of making the yogurt involves putting it in a cheesecloth to strain out the moisture. This strained yogurt is then frozen for several hours.

This process results in a thicker version of yogurt, almost like clay in texture. It can be served layered with fruits, biscuits, chocolates, or any other toppings of one’s choice. Some users also have tried to mold their yogurt into different shapes, thus giving it a creative twist.

The trend that started on TikTok has now garnered millions of views with some videos receiving over 1.5 million likes.

How does the dry yogurt originate?

The dry yogurt is inspired by a Middle Eastern yogurt spread called labneh which is made by straining out the excess water from the yogurt to achieve a thick consistency. A bit of salt is added to the yogurt before it is hung in a cheesecloth over a bowl in the fridge. The dip is then drizzled with honey or olive oil and is eaten with pita bread and vegetables.

Unlike its inspiration, the TikTok version of the dry yogurt is sweeter. Many have experimented with adding food colors to the yogurt and layer their ‘dry yogurt’ bowl with fruits and candies to transform it into a visually appealing delicacy!

Is the 'dry yogurt' a healthier option?

According to a New York-based Registered Dietician, Aderet Dana Hoch, "Dry yogurt is a healthy dairy product rich in protein, healthy fats, calcium, and beneficial probiotics."

Her studies note that dry yogurt can have up to five grams of protein per ounce. This makes it a superfood suited for maintaining blood sugar and muscle function. Since it's protein-rich, you will also be full for a longer period.

It is also loaded with calcium which improves bone health and dental health. It is also a good source of probiotics which helps maintain your gut health.

However, Roch also recommended ditching the coloring and relishing the dry yogurt with its original color for maximum benefits.

How to incorporate ‘dry yogurt’ into your daily recipes?

Here are the ways you can eat 'dry yogurt':

  • Pair it with Hummus to enhance the flavor and texture.
  • Serve it with fruits or veggies for a nutritious meal.
  • Make a creamy salad dressing with it.
  • Replace the classic mayo in your deviled eggs recipe with dry yogurt.
  • Use it as a sauce in your sandwiches and burgers.

So what are you waiting for? Add dry yogurt to your meals to stir that creativity in you and make healthier food options tastier for a blissful experience.
