Minecraft creator, Markus “Notch” Persson, announced that he was working on Minecraft 2, and gamers have been celebrating the news.
A popular game updates account on X @Dexerto, reshared the news, and a user reacted by saying:
“Minecraft 2 and GTA 6 the same year? The 2010s are back.”
Other gamers on X mirrored the excitement for the second installment of the beloved gaming franchise:
“Yo, Minecraft 2. This is gonna be legendary for real man. Take my diamonds already!" A fan tweeted excitedly.
"I would get 5 copies in a heartbeat,” another fan reacted to the post.
“This is going to be epic. We are in for a fun ride,” another comment read.
Another section of the comments wasn’t impressed by the news and expressed the same:
“Honestly I don’t even know what a Minecraft 2 would be. What does Minecraft need that can’t just be added to the game?” A netizen asked.
“He can keep it,” an X user responded.
“As much as I love Minecraft….. do we really need a sequel?" Another gamer wondered.
Other X users were quick to point out that Markus “Notch” Persson had sold his rights to the game to Microsoft in September 2014.
“Now how would he do that considering he sold Minecraft to Microsoft?” One gamer reacted.
“He sold it already, he can’t do it,” Another X user replied.
“But he sold Minecraft, or I’m wrong,” A gamer asked in the comments.
What we know about the Minecraft 2 game announcement by Notch
Notch, the creator of Minecraft on January 1, 2025, created a poll on X for followers to indicate the game they’d like him to create next. The poll featured two options, the first was a rogue-like mixed with a first-person dungeon crawler based on tiles.
The second option was a spiritual second version of the Minecraft game, which he dubbed, “Minecraft 2" in the poll. An overwhelming majority picked the second option of the poll. Later on. Notch revealed that Minecraft 2 had won the polls stating:
“I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that's super similar to the first one, and I'm loving working on games again,”
He added:
“I don't super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know I'm making one, so I figured I'd absolutely be willing to give it an honest shot in the form of a spiritual successor to Minecraft and put up a poll about it."
According to Notch, the “spiritual game to Minecraft” would share similarities with the bestselling video game, and be based on the expectations of fans of the original franchise. He also added that he might create an early access version of the game to enable feedback from fans.
