Global coffee chain Starbucks launched its holiday menu on November 7, 2024, and on the first day, the company's mobile app suffered an outage. Multiple users reported that they could not order from the brand's online app.
This annual menu launch is almost like a ritual for many Starbucks goers. Some fans start the festive season with this holiday special menu. However, due to the outage, customers were frustrated as the app’s mobile ordering and payment-related features were down.
Malfunction of the Starbucks app
Reports of the app malfunction first began surfacing around 8 a.m. ET, which is considered the middle of the morning coffee rush.
Downdetector, a website that tracks outages of online websites or apps, reported a noticeable spike in complaints about the app’s performance.
Social media users in cities like Washington, D.C., and New York complained that they were unable to place orders or buy holiday season merchandise through the app. Most of them encountered messages that said:
“Omg mobile order for Starbucks is down & I’m bout to cry.” A frustrated customer reported.
Multiple customers took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to share their situations. One such user made a post saying:
“The Starbucks app being down the day you drop the holiday menu is criminal lol.”
The company acknowledged the app issues on social media. However, for disappointed customers, it offered only a little explanation for the disruption. Below is what the company had to mention on social platforms:
“The order ahead and pay feature in our app is currently experiencing a temporary outage.”
The coffee chain further encouraged customers to order directly to their physical stores. However, no timeline was officially provided for resolving the outage.
This year’s holiday lineup of the coffee chain includes a gingerbread-flavored tea. The menu also featured the peppermint mocha, chestnut praline latte, and caramel brûlée latte. Alongside these beverages, Starbucks introduced a fresh array of holiday merchandise.
The merch collection includes reusable tumblers, mugs, and accessories decorated in holiday-themed colors. Fans await the menu containing festive beverages and seasonal merchandise each November.
This is marked as a significant event in the brand's annual calendar. The holiday menu is known for combining familiar winter flavors like peppermint, caramel, and gingerbread.
In recent years, Starbucks has made efforts to expand its app and mobile ordering capabilities. Numerous users prefer to order through the company's app. However, the app's outage on the first day of its holiday menu launch inconvenienced many customers.
