Airline company, Spirit Airlines, seems to have a dress code that passengers must adhere to. On January 22, 2025, the airline company updated its “Contract of Carriage,” which details the new clothing guidelines that passengers must follow while boarding its aircraft.

On the ninth page of the “Conduct/Condition” section, it has been mentioned that passengers might not be allowed to board the aircraft under eight conditions. One of these conditions states the type of clothing and footwear non-permissible for passengers. A person might not be allowed to board a flight who:

“Is barefoot or inadequately clothed (i.e., see-through clothing; not adequately covered; exposed br**sts, butt*cks, or other private parts), or whose clothing or article, including body art, is lewd, obscene, or offensive in nature.”

To reiterate the point, Spirit Airlines has mentioned that any see-through clothing or one that is deemed offensive or obscene is not allowed. Additionally, passengers who also have some kind of offensive odor, except qualified disability, will also be restricted from traveling.

Besides these restrictions, guests may be denied boarding a Spirit Airlines aircraft or removed from a flight if they are disruptive, abusive, or pose a risk of annoyance to others. This also applies to passengers who appear intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.

Guests interfering with the flight crew or failing to follow their instructions will not be allowed to board a flight. Moreover, people deemed a security threat or have a contagious disease that could spread during the flight, such as chickenpox will not be allowed. The guidelines suggest that one must remain seated with a seat belt fastened.

In 2024, two female passengers were denied boarding a Spirit Airlines flight for their dressing choices

In October 2024, two female passengers, Teresa Araujo, and Tara Kehidi, traveling from LAX to New Orleans, were kicked off a plane because the flight attendant claimed they were inadequately clothed. One of the girls posted a video in which she said:

“This guy is trying to kick us out of the plane because she is wearing a crop top and because I am wearing a crop top.”

Although Teresa put on her sweater, the Spirit Airlines in-flight officials said it was too late as it interrupted the safety briefing session. According to a report by Inside Edition, a third passenger showed solidarity towards the two girls by removing her t-shirt that revealed her crop top.

The third passenger, Carla Hagar, was asked about her reactions to the incident, to which she expressed her unhappiness, especially the way the policy was worded referring to body parts. Former Flight Attendant, Elaine Swann, while speaking to the media outlet, said dress code is a subjective domain. However, Swann said it depends on who is looking.

In other news, Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy in November 2024. Its financial struggle started during the pandemic. The airline company also struggled with engine recall which grounded many of its jets.

Spirit Airlines has been well-known for its bright yellow planes and cheaper fares. Although ranked as one of the safest US airlines, it reportedly gets the maximum customer complaints.
