On 11 December 2024, John Galliano posted a poetic and heartfelt letter on his official Instagram account announcing his departure from Maison Margiela. After serving 10 years as Maison Margiela's Creative Director, Galliano has decided to part ways. In his letter, he mentioned how grateful he was for two important people in his life.

Questions are already swirling in everyone's minds in the fashion world. Where will John Galliano go next? Who will he be working with? Galliano answered all of these questions in the letter itself. He writes,

"The rumors... Everyone wants to know, and everyone wants to dream. When the time is right, all will be revealed."

In his letter, John Galliano expresses his gratitude for the second chance he was given with Maison Margiela. He also talks about his epiphanies while working with the people at Maison Margiela. He also expresses some of his fond memories and works.

John Galliano's creative journey and his mark in the fashion industry

John Galliano began his fashion career by starting his own label with the support of Amanda Harlech and Stephen Jones. However, this pursuit of his did not flourish, and he went bankrupt in 1988.

Galliano restarted again the following year by going to Paris for financial backing. 1989 was the year when Galliano debuted his first fashion show as part of the Paris Fashion Week. He also designed Kylie Minogue's costumes for her Let's Get To It Tour in 1991.

John Galliano's career skyrocketed when he met Anna Wintour, Vogue's editor-in-chief. She supported him financially and introduced him to prominent connections in the fashion world.

By 1995, Galliano was appointed as the designer of Givenchy by Bernard Arnault. In 1996, he broke history by being one of the first British designers to exhibit a collection at a French fashion house since World War II. Later on, Galliano was moved to Dior by LMVH.

However, in 2010, Galliano experienced a hiccup in his flourishing career when he made anti-semitic remarks during a drunk incident. Because of this incident, John Galliano was fired from his position at Dior.

After a two-year exile, John Galliano received forgiveness from the fashion industry after expressing how disgusted he was with his behavior. In 2013, he was taken under the wings of Oscar de la Renta while preparing for his Fall 2013 collection during the February New York Fashion Week.

Galliano was serious about moving forward from the 2010 experience. He joined Maison Margiela on 6 October 2013, which again led to his breakthrough in the fashion community. In his letter on Instagram, he expresses,

"A second chance. With childlike eyes and forgotten innocence, we make amends, believing in ourselves - for God is in all of us. NOT when we cancel each other out."

John Galliano has received numerous awards and honors over the years. He was named British Designer of the Year in the following years - 1987, 1994, 1995, and 1997. He was also given the Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2001 Birthday Honours List.

In 2002, he was recognized as the Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) for his contribution. He was also awarded the French Legion of Honour in 2009, which was later withdrawn by decree of the president of the Republic, François Hollande, in 2012.

After 10 years with Maison Margiela, John Galliano leaves with a decade of illustrious and groundbreaking work. Galliano is a creative genius who has managed to redeem and reinvent himself in the fashion world. While Galliano's future is unrevealed, he urges his fans to believe that "when the time is right, all will be revealed."
