The United States Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) releases the list of holidays before the beginning of every year. Most drivers remain confused about whether the office remains closed or open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

It must be noted that the DMV will remain open on December 31, 2024, and closed on January 1, 2025. Since the holiday list does not mention New Year’s Eve as a holiday, it is assumed that the office shall function as per the regular working hours on that day.

After New Year’s Day, the offices will resume working from the next day, i.e. January 2, 2025. Some of the services shall remain accessible to people online.

However, it must be noted that closures often depend on the State in which the office is located as there can be local holidays too. Those who wish to check for the dates can visit the website of the state they reside.

If one wants to visit the nearest office, they must first check with the authorities whether they would need an appointment or not. However, it might take days to get an appointment or reserve a slot to avail of services like license renewal or road test.

When do the DMVs remain closed in a year?

The DMVs mostly remain closed on holidays which are prescribed in the holiday list of the concerned State. However, there can be certain rules regarding special holidays. For example, the DC DMV website mentions that when a holiday is observed on Monday, all its service centers, adjudication services, and other specified facilities shall remain closed.

Other than that, here is a common list of holidays that are observed by the agency.

  • January 15 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • February 17 – President’s Day or Washington’s Birthday
  • May 26 – Memorial Day
  • June 19 - Juneteenth National Independence Day
  • July 4 - Independence Day
  • September 1 – Labor Day
  • November 11 - Veterans Day
  • November 27 - Thanksgiving Day
  • December 25 – Christmas Day

Some DMVs also observe the day after Thanksgiving Day as a holiday. Places like DC also hold Indigenous Peoples' Day on October 13 and the office remains closed.

This year, the motor vehicle agency in North Carolina faced long delays in issuing driver’s permits. Instead of receiving a license in two to three weeks, applicants had to wait six to seven weeks. The agency decided to switch to a new vendor.

The new driver’s license had a brand-new look and was designed and made most securely. They are laser-engraved and come with over 50 security features.
