“Physically, it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done”: Cynthia Erivo on starring in Wicked

Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the blockbuster movie-musical, Wicked, sat down with Elle Magazine to discuss some aspects of making the film, her relationship with co-star Ariana Grande, and her upcoming projects.

Erivo revealed that she preferred the practical effects makeup to achieve Elphaba’s green complexion, as opposed to the CGI effects that were considered in the beginning. In the interview, she also addressed conversations about getting the role of Elphaba as a “woke hire.”

Erivo stated that she auditioned for the role like everybody else, and her credentials in the film industry contributed to her being selected. Cynthia Erivo described the process of making the movie as one of the hardest things she’d ever done:

"Physically, it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, truly,’ she admits. ‘I did all my own stunts – the jumps, the flying. It looks simple, but 20 seconds on screen takes hours to do."

Erivo also developed a friendship with Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, and added that they talk on FaceTime for hours and are protective of each other.

The singer also revealed that she was working on her second album, which is based on her life story and focuses on her voice.
