Multimillion-dollar conglomerate McDonald's has officially marked the onset of the spooky season with the return of the beloved Boo Buckets. They announced the news on October 1, and the reviews have been mixed. Customers can head to any participating store to collect their pails, which come in white, orange, green, and blue.
These pails feature cute, fuzzy monster motifs adorned on the front, and they come with stickers for kids to customize them. They serve as a Happy Meal container and also double as a trick-or-treat bucket. All four colors will be available as long as supplies last.
Up until this year, the pails came with lids, sending many into a frenzy when the images of the upcoming Boo Buckets were released. When the official McDonald's account tweeted about the pails, scores of customers flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts.
While some felt it might be a waste, others offered suggestions to improve the design. One user commented:
"Can we bring back the lids tho."
Others chimed in as well, either to appreciate the token of their childhood or to point out the poor design, as one commenter put it:
"Those aren't the Boo Buckets of my youth. Call them something else," one user claimed.
"This makes my lunch break an absolute Spooky thrill. Here is my jack o lantern confession. I drove to multiple McDonald's to know what color boo bucket they had. The thrill of the Spooky Chase. And I called them too when I got down to the last color. Happy October," another shared.
"these look awful and have those garbage fake lids that do nothing but make them harder to hold, do something right or don’t do it at all," one user noted.
"Can we have the actual original bucket from the 90s? Also, maybe the actual original cups that aren’t cheap plastic?" another requested.
Several more commenters seemingly had an issue with the looks of the buckets.
"Ew! I hate them! This design is awful, Bring back the OG version," one user said.
"Alright!!! I love Boo Buckets!! I literally use them to trick or treat!" another announced.
McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts, and more announce Halloween offerings
McDonald's first debuted the beloved Boo Buckets in 1986, and since then, they have hit the shelves around the same time in October, sporadically.
The original trio featured a ghost, a pumpkin, and Frankenstein. Over the years, there have been several changes, such as the inclusion of a witch, ghost, skeleton, and mummy, among others.
McDonald's is not the only conglomerate to announce a seasonal offering, as Dunkin' Donuts did just that on October 1, when they announced their Halloween Munchkins Bucket.
Akin to the Boo Buckets, these dual-purpose pails come with an assortment of about 50 Munchkin Donut Hole Treats. They will be available at all Dunkin’ shops starting October 16.
Furthermore, Tim Hortons also announced a spooky season menu, which includes glow-in-the-dark trick-or-treat buckets. These can be purchased separately or come with Timbits, which is another word for donut holes.
