Airbnb partners with 211 LA to provide free housing for Los Angeles wildfire evacuees: Everything you need to know

As devastating wildfires have gripped Los Angeles, an unexpected alliance has emerged as a beacon of hope.

Airbnb has joined forces with 211 LA, a local non-profit organization to offer free temporary shade for the evacuees seeking refuge from the wildfires. The initiative comes as a lifeline for those who are forced to evacuate their homes due to rapidly spreading fires.

The stays are completely free and are funded by Airbnb.org and Airbnb hosts. Many of the homes are also offered at a discounted rate. In a press release dated January 8, 2025, Airbnb stated:

“The accommodations are completely free for guests and are funded by Airbnb.org and the generosity of Airbnb hosts—many of whom offer their homes for free or at a discount through Airbnb.org.”

According to a report by Travel Noire, current locations where assistance is being provided include Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Sylmar, Altadena, Pasadena, and Santa Monica.


Who is eligible for a free housing program?

If you require a shelter or are looking to assist somebody who needs a temporary home in case affected by Los Angeles wildfires you can fill out a form by visiting 211 LA’s website. But, certain conditions make you eligible for it, these include:

  1. You are displaced from your home due to recent fires.
  2. You are currently residing in an evacuation zone.
  3. You should have an active Airbnb account
  4. You must be 18 years and above.

Anyone who wishes to make donations by visiting the 211 LA website.


How did the Los Angeles Wildfires take place?

The Los Angeles wildfires began on January 7, 2025, driven by climatic conditions. It spread intensely across thousands of acres, destroying structures and homes, as several reports indicated. ABC News reported that the Palisades Fire has been spreading at five football fields per minute.

According to the BBC report, at least 10 people have been killed in the wildfires and hundreds of buildings burned. Despite the efforts of firefighters, the blazes remain uncontained.

The report further mentioned that in Los Angeles County around 179,000 residents are under evacuation orders. While another 200,000 have been warned to leave their homes.

The BBC report has called it one of the "most destructive" fires "in the history of Los Angeles," as it has destroyed at least 5,000 structures. The areas affected by fires include Palisades, Eton, Hurst, Lidia, and Kenneth. The report further mentioned that the fires in Sunset, Woodley, and Olivas have been contained.

Companies such as Uber and Lyft have also stepped in to help the displaced residents. Uber is offering a $40 account credit for rides to shelters. Customers need to use the code: WILDFIRE25. While, Lyft provides $50 in ride credits to and fro from shelters, by using the code: CAFIRERELIEF25.
