The Met Gala is a night of glamour that brings fashion and art together. Every year, the biggest names in entertainment, fashion, and sports gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for this event, which raises funds for the museum’s Costume Institute.
The gala also serves as an introduction to the Institute’s annual spring exhibition, which plays a major role in the event’s theme and dress code.
For 2025, according to Vogue, the Met Gala will take place on May 5, with the theme: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The accompanying dress code, Tailored for You, allows guests to explore the art of tailoring.
Moreover, the 2025 Met Gala’s official co-chairs include: actor Colman Domingo, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, rapper A$AP Rocky, music producer Pharrell Williams, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. NBA star LeBron James joins them as an honorary co-chair.
Sharing this year's Met Gala theme and co-chairs, Vogue Magazine made an Instagram post, captioning,
"On Monday, May 5, #MetGala co-chairs Colman Domingo, @LewisHamilton, @ASAPRocky, @Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour—along with honorary chair LeBron James will welcome guests to the @metmuseum for an exhibition entitled, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”"
The caption continues:
"The @metcostumeinstitute’s exhibit will explore the role of sartorial style in forming Black identities, focusing on the emergence, significance, and proliferation of the Black dandy. The 2025 Met Gala dress code announced today as “Tailored for You,” is a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and is “purposefully designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretation.”"
The 2025 Met Gala dress code: Tailored for You
This year’s dress code, Tailored for You, encourages guests to feature menswear traditions with personalized variations. While some attendees may opt for classic tailored suits, others might reinterpret tailoring through modern designs or unconventional material choices.
The phrase Tailored for You suggests individuality. One can expect to see traditional suiting elements such as:
- Structured blazers and waistcoats
- Dress shirts and high-necked collars
- Plaid, pinstripes, and other embroideries
- Pocket squares, brooches, and other accessories
- Velvet, silk, and textured fabrics
Given the exhibit’s historical roots, fashion enthusiasts might also see nods to period fashion.
The 2025 Met Gala theme explored
This year’s exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity (2009).
The exhibit will showcase garments, paintings, and photographs that trace the evolution of Black menswear from the 18th century to the present.
The concept of dandyism, which is often associated with sophistication, has historically been a tool for Black individuals. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Black men used tailored clothing to challenge societal norms and redefine their identities. The 2025 exhibit aims to highlight this transformation.
As per Vogue, Monica L. Miller describes dandyism as:
“A strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary—especially during the time of enslavement, to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human, even.”
2025 Met Gala co-chairs
The Met Gala’s co-chairs play a major role in shaping the event’s vision, and this year’s lineup reflects the gala’s theme of honoring Black style.
- Colman Domingo: The Emmy-winning actor made his Met Gala debut in 2024, wearing a Willy Chavarria suit that paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman and André Leon Talley.
- Lewis Hamilton: The British Formula 1 driver has been a regular at fashion’s biggest night since 2015, using his platform to spotlight Black designers.
- A$AP Rocky: The rapper is known for making bold statements. His previous looks have ranged from oversized capes to layered kilts and embellished jeans.
