Inspired by "Squid Game," KFC has introduced a menu that combines traditional Korean food with the company's famous fried chicken to celebrate the premiere of its second season.
For this limited-edition culinary endeavor, the company has teamed up with Netflix to immerse guests in its survival-themed horror-thriller visuals.
What is the new menu?
A burger made of chicken fillets prepared according to the original KFC recipe, drizzled with Korean sauce, coleslaw, pickle, and a bright pink bun that conjures the visuals of the audiovisual smash, is proposed in place of the series' well-known sugar cookies.
The Netflix x The Squid Game menu, which is already offered in all KFC locations in Spain, is completed by their bucket of 12 spicy wings or 10 crispy strips that are likewise glazed with Korean sauce and sesame.
Additionally, KFC and Netflix had planned a live activity for December 19 that was accessible only to a small group of participants in order to expand the experience of the partnership. Ibai Llanos, the content developer, presented it, and his Twitch channel streamed it live.
With 456 competitors vying for the 40 million won (€27,108) main prize, the thrill, suspense, and difficulties of the Squid Game were replicated during the event. An immersive experience that enables viewers to feel the drama and terror of the series as if they were actually there.
About the show
Hwang Dong-hyuk is the creator, writer, and director of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller television series Squid Game, which is available on Netflix.
The show focuses on a furtive competition in which 456 participants—all of them are severely impoverished—risk their lives to compete in a series of lethal kid's games in an attempt to earn ₩45.6 billion (US$39.86 million).
The title of the series is derived from the Korean children's game ojingeo ("squid"). The ensemble cast is led by Lee Jung-jae.
On September 17, 2021, the first season of Squid Game was broadcast globally to widespread praise and interest. It won multiple awards, including one Golden Globe and Emmys, and became Netflix's most-watched series.
The second season was released on December 26, 2024, after production started in July 2023. The third and final season, which will be released in 2025, was filmed simultaneously with the second season.
As the first Korean series to be nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and the first non-English series, the first season also created history with its four SAG Award nominations.
On an individual basis, HoYeon Jung became the second actress of both Asian and Korean heritage to receive a SAG Award nomination, while Lee Jung-Jae became the first male actor from both Asia and Korea to do so.
With both actors taking home awards, the show became the first television series that wasn't in English to win a SAG. Additionally, the show was nominated for 14 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Best Drama, marking its first nomination in a non-English category.
