About Blizzard
Dairy Queen was founded in 1940 after John Fremont “JF” McCullough and his son Alex developed the soft-serve formula. They then took it to a friend, Sherb Noble, and asked him to offer it as a product in his store and the rest is history. On the first day, the product sold over 1600 servings within two hours which paved the way for future success. Noble and McCullough went on to open a store in 1940 and while it shut down in the 1950s, the chain still managed to expand rapidly.
That was thanks to the franchise system as by 1947 they had over 100 stores, by 1950 they had over 1400, and by 1955, the chain had over 2500 stores across America. They then started expanding as the company became International Dairy Queen, Inc. (IDQ) in 1962. That helped the franchise become a lot larger than McCullough imagined at the start as they bought several other companies including Orange Julius. By 2014, the company had over 6400 stores in over 25 countries although around 70% of them were in the United States. Now, as of 2025, they have nearly 7000 stores and are continuing to grow rapidly across the world.
