About Panda Express

Panda Express was technically established in 1982 after former UCLA head football coach Terry Donahue’s brother Dan invited Andrew Cherng, Peggy Cherng, and Andrew's father, Master Chef Ming Tsai Cherng to open a fast-food version of Panda Inn. They named it Panda Express and it first opened in the Glendale Galleria. Things picked up rapidly, with a second location opening three years later. By the early 1990s, the fast-food chain had restaurants in major shopping malls across the US and had started experimenting with other methods to set up their restaurants.

By 2017, Panda Express had opened its 2000th location in New York City and was doing annual sales of over $3 billion. That has only continued to rise and in 2022, the company filed a patent to expand the Panda Express brand into the Metaverse. Furthermore, in the same year, the franchise had over 2400 locations across the world, making it the largest Asian-segment restaurant chain in America.
