About Del Taco

Del Taco started out as a simple restaurant opened by Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson in September 1964 under the name Casa Del Taco. The restaurant was an instant success and soon, they had opened four more stores by mid-1960. By the end of the decade, the company had created its logo and had also created a plan to franchise the brand in order to improve its income.

That worked out superbly as by 1978, they had over 100 stores across the US which was after Hackbarth and Jameson sold the company to a group of investors. They then sold the rights to use and develop the Del Taco name which helped increase the number of investors and franchisees. So much so, that by the mid-1980s, they had just under 400 restaurants and had plans to hit 650 before the turn of the century.

But other issues meant that the company shrunk and then grew over the course of four years, hitting 300 stores again by the mid-1990s. They then started to turn things around again and by early 2000, they had over 350 stores in ten US states. The company continued to grow at a rapid rate and even launched a sports-sponsorship program with several teams. This helped improve their popularity and they finally hit the 500 mark in 2008. Now as of 2025, Del Taco has over 600 stores across America.
