The market is full of an overwhelming number of products for men. It is not uncommon for one to confuse cologne, after-shave, and other grooming products with one another. Some of these terms are also used interchangeably, but it is important to note that they differ and serve different purposes. Additionally, they also have different wearability.

Typically, after-shaves are placed at the lowest in the fragrance ladder. Put simply, colognes last longer than after-shaves. Understanding the differences between colognes and after-shaves allows you to choose a product accordingly.

Cologne vs After-shave: What makes them different, and which lasts longer?

A cologne is synonymous with a perfume, but an after-shave is not. As the name of the latter suggests, it is used after shaving to reduce irritation and clean the skin. One should opt for cologne if they are looking for a scent that lasts longer than an hour and does not immediately dissipate. We have listed the differences between cologne and an after-shave and have included examples for your reference:

Composition:

Cologne and after-shaves are inherently different. The latter are primarily made of alcohol and a small percentage of fragrant oil. This means that aftershave is typically not made to have a lasting fragrance. Instead, its primary aim is to disinfect any cuts.

On the contrary, colognes contain a much higher percentage of fragrance oil. Confused about what EDT, EDC, and EDP are? Colognes differ based on the concentration of the fragrance oil.

  • An Eau de Cologne has a concentration of 2-4%
  • An Eau de Toilette has a concentration of 5-15%
  • An Eau de Parfum has a concentration of 15-20%

Application:

A very easy way to spot a perfume/cologne from an after-shave is how it is applied. When you open the bottle of an after-shave, you'll notice an opening for the splash application. At the same time, all perfumes have an atomizer that allows you to spray the product on your body and clothes. You can use both products if needed, but they have their own independent functions to serve.

Product Examples:

You can use a cologne and an after-shave for maximum fragrance. However, it is recommended that complementary products be used. We have listed two products that go well together and can help you feel refreshed.

You can use an after-shave instead of a cologne for some fragrance but not vice versa. This means an after-shave has some fragrance and can last for some time. However, a cologne can't be used as a disinfectant for cuts or for closing the pores. Recognizing the differences in fragrances allows you to determine where to invest your money depending on how long it will last.
