Founded in 1983, Jimmy John’s is an American sandwich chain that began after Jimmy John Liautaud’s father gave him a choice; to either join the army or start a business. Liautaud chose the latter and started his sandwich shop in 1982, naming it Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches in 1983. The business quickly took off and by 1987, Liautaud had three outlets across Illinois and by 1994, he had ten stores and had also started franchising. That changed Jimmy John’s future and as of 2025, the sandwich chain has over 2500 restaurants across America with a large majority of them being franchises.

About Jimmy John’s

After he graduated from high school, Jimmy John Liautaud decided to start a business and his father loaned him $25,000 in exchange for a 48% stake. Liautaud first wanted to start a hot dog stand but changed his mind and opened a sandwich shop in 1982. The business soon picked up and in 1983 he named it Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and by the end of his first year, he began to make a profit.

By 1987, Liautaud had opened his third restaurant in Illinois and had bought out his father’s interest in the business, making him the sole owner. Things changed in 1988 after Liautaud met Jamie Coulter, who taught him how to effectively run multiple locations and helped him develop a franchising prototype. So much so, that by 1994, Jimmy John’s had 10 restaurants owned by Liautaud himself and had also sold their first franchise.

Things rapidly grew from there and by 2001, the company had over 100 stores. A year later, that number doubled to around 2002. Now as of 2025, the company has over 2700 stores across America although 98% of those are franchises with only a select few owned by Liautaud. The company was also sold to Inspire Brands for an undisclosed sum and Liautaud stepped down as chairman of the company, becoming an adviser to the brand instead.
