In an unexpected turn of events, X is reportedly planning to remove the Direct Messaging (DM) feature from the social media platform known as Twitter. The rumors started when user Zach Warunek, who is a Software Engineer at X, decided to drop the bombshell that X is trying to do away with the DM feature.

The news has sent the netizens into a tailspin as farewell messages poured in from all corners of the world.

X reportedly in talks to remove DM feature, netizens laugh

The latest feature reportedly facing the chopping block in the ever-spinning carnival of human ingenuity is the DM feature in X. First, let's start off with a moment of silence for DM, the unsung hero of our online existence. The news was met with instant outrage from users who balked at the thought of being locked out of the messaging feature:

"So y’all really just want us to argue in public now?", joked one fan (via X / @SoulboundTV)
"Elon got rejected and now he’s removing DMs", quipped another (via X / @SASForPres)

The soap episode doesn't end there. X is also reportedly planning to replace the DM feature with an advanced AI-driven version that will improve the existing features, such as fully encrypted messaging, vanish mode, and voice messages. The improved version allegedly will also come with the option of giving users the option of sending PDF, but it will also have a much cornier name- XChat.

While some users were willing to compromise on the name in exchange for better features, not everyone shared the sentiment on social media. XChat became the butt of jokes on social media as users had a field day on X mocking the supposed absurdity of the situation:

"Xchat sounds like a website you’d go on to get groomed",one fan chimed in (via X / @Mike27356894)
"Putting X in front of everything isn’t as innovative as elon thinks it is", joked another (via X / @buffys)

If the rumored changes do go through, Xchat certainly would have the potential to be a great introduction to the social media platform. In Elon's latest attempt to give X a makeover, he's planning to make X like Instagram but with extra oomph. The days aren't far away when you'll be able to order a cab, book a flight, and file your taxes on X itself!

One fan was really enthusiastic about the potential changes and welcomed them, even as he tried to defend XChat:

"Bummer I'm gonna miss those people asking me for money lol", quipped the fan.

The name for the potential feature has endless comedic potential and had the netizens in a bout of laughter. The fallout from the news was hilarious, to say the least, with netizens turning X into a battleground of memes, jokes, and conspiracy theories:

"When my girl sees xchat on my phone its over for me", joked one fan (via X / @GameMasterRC)

Another fan poked at the potential update with a hilarious meme that summed up the mood of users on X:

The news of DMs being potentially replaced by XChat sent the internet into a frenzy. Even as the farewell messages for in on our timelines, netizens still found a way to turn the disruptive tech rumor into a meme fest. In his latest issue of 'trying to fix something that isn't broken,' Elon Musk might have inadvertently broken the internet instead.
