The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has seen its share of ups and downs, but Captain America: Brave New World seems to be seeing more of the latter. The film, which kicked off a new chapter for the Star-Spangled Avenger, took a deep plunge in its second weekend, earning just $28.3 million domestically an astronomical 68.1% drop from opening weekend. That ranks it as the third-largest second-weekend drop in MCU history, after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Black Widow.
Though one of the most anticipated MCU films of the year, the reception from fans wasn't quite as much. Although some fans appreciated the film, others couldn't help but be confused by the direction, flow, and general entertainment. And when a film struggles at the box office, the internet specifically Twitter wastes no time roasting it to oblivion.
The Internet Reacts: Roasts, Disappointment, Captain America, and Red Hulk
A simple tweet reporting the numbers "Captain America: Brave New World earns $28.3M in the film’s second domestic weekend. It was a 68.1% drop from its opening weekend, the third-biggest drop for an MCU movie." was enough to send fans into a frenzy.
One reply in particular caught fire:
"Wow, that’s a lot of money."
The sarcastic tone, mixed with a bit of disbelief, summed up how many people felt about the situation. The post quickly gained traction, with fans jumping in to poke fun at the film’s underperformance, criticize Marvel’s recent output, and share their own (often hilarious) takes on why the movie flopped so hard.
If there’s one thing MCU fans are good at, it’s reacting to box office flops with equal parts humor and frustration. And Brave New World gave them plenty to work with.
Some fans just couldn’t believe the drop, with one commenting,
"Why is it flopping so bad?"
Others pointed to a larger trend, blaming Marvel for what they see as a decline in quality. One user wrote,
"MCU has literally turned Hulk into a joke 😩" referencing the ongoing debate about how Marvel has handled its once-powerful characters.
And then there’s the Red Hulk situation. Fans were set up for Harrison Ford's reveal of Red Hulk, but this soon turned to revulsion when it was seen that he had virtually no screen time.
"Red Hulk appeared only for 10 mins"
complained one disgruntled fan, recording the general discontent that the movie failed to deliver on its strongest appeal.
Not all viewers were angry, however. Some even wanted to like the movie but just couldn't get into it. "I wanted to like it but was kinda bored the whole time," another confessed, echoing a sentiment shared by many who felt that the movie lacked the same kick as earlier Captain America films.
While Brave New World’s numbers aren’t catastrophic (it’s still making millions), the sharp drop signals that even Captain America isn’t immune to audience fatigue. The days of guaranteed billion-dollar box office runs seem to be fading, and with every underperforming film, the pressure mounts for Marvel Studios to course-correct.
For now, though, the internet is having a blast reacting to the situation. Whether it’s roasting the film’s financial struggles or debating where Captain America went wrong, one thing is clear when a movie flops, fans will make sure to turn it into pure entertainment. And honestly? That might be more fun than the movie itself.
