The internet is quite an unpredictable place, where memes can be made out of literally anything that one would never imagine it to be. One such meme that has become popular on the internet is the ‘Sticking out your Tongue for the Picture’ meme. The TikTok trend features people singing the song lyrics of SUICIDAL-IDOL’s “Ecstacy” with their tongues sticking out. The meme has since then inspired several other videos of people lip-syncing various other songs, and even posing for pictures with their tongues sticking out.

Origin of the ‘Sticking out your Tongue for the Picture’ meme

The origin of the meme can be traced back to 2021, a user by the name of 'SUICIDAL-IDOL' posted a song on Soundcloud titled "Ecstacy" which ended up receiving over 379,000 plays in 2 years. Soon after, in the same year, two videos with slowed-down versions of the song were released on TikTok and YouTube, both crossing 1 million views each on both platforms.

The slowed-down version continued to gain popularity not just on TikTok, but other social media platforms as well. By October 2023, there were over 238,000 videos featuring the slowed version on TikTok itself, with many of the videos gaining several million views. The video was especially popular among content creators who would play the song in the background while promoting products or outfits, posting compilations of their favorite stars, playing video games, making tutorial videos, etc. on their respective social media pages.

One line in particular from the song that especially stuck with people who heard it was "Sticking Out Your Tongue For The Picture", which essentially mocked Millenial and Gen Z women who would stick their tongue out while posing for photos in an attempt to look silly and fun. So as the slowed version of the song kept on becoming more and more popular, videos of young women sticking their tongues out with the song playing in the background started gaining popularity over the internet.

This trend of young women sticking their tongues out in videos then ended up paving the way for a hilarious new trend, where people dug up old photos of celebrities and other influential figures with their tongues sticking out, stating how the 'Sticking out your Tongue for the Picture' was already famous before people blowing up on the internet.

Sticking Out Your Gyat for the Rizzler

Many different variations of the meme have emerged on the internet, the most popular one being the "Sticking Out Your Gyat for the Rizzler" meme. It features a redone version of the 'Sticking out your Tongue for the Picture' song, but the keywords in each line of the lyrics have been replaced with Gen Apha slang such as gyatt, rizzler, sigma, etc. The first video was initially released on YouTube and TikTok and has received millions of views to date on both platforms, inspiring hundreds of thousands of hilarious videos using the song.
