There is a hot new meme in town, and this time, it is the 'Ding Chilling' meme. The meme features the Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren, often seen sitting in a room alone and relaxing/chilling.
His relaxed demeanor in even tense situations became popular in April 2023, when Ding Liren became the World Chess Champion. He has since become not only a highly admired chess player but also a highly enjoyed meme in the chess community.
Origin of the 'Ding Chilling' Meme
The 'Ding Chilling' meme originated from a meme called "Bing Chilling,' that went viral in 2021.
The meme featured a video posted by Actor-Wrestler John Cena sitting in a car and speaking in Mandarin while eating ice cream. He referred to the ice cream in Mandarin, which is 'Bing Qi Lin', but in spoken form sounds like 'Bing Chilling.'. The video immediately blew up, and 'Bing Chilling' memes started circulating all over the internet.
Recently, the meme has taken on a new form as the 'Ding Chilling' meme ever since Ding Liren became the World Chess Champion in April 2023. A clip from the video was posted on Chess.com's Instagram page, stating how Ding was seen 'chilling' during his first game.
The post immediately became flooded with comments saying 'Ding Chilling,' and the meme has only continued to gain more popularity ever since. New clips of him relaxing/chilling in the side room during his games keep coming out, much to the excitement of the chess fan base.
About Ding Liren
Ding Liren was born in Wenzhou, a city in the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang in China. He started playing chess at the age of four and later won The Chinese Chess Championship three times, in 2009, 2011, and 2012. He then represented China in all four Chess Olympiads between 2012 and 2018 and bagged the gold medal in 2014 and 2018. He became the World Chess Champion in April 2023 at 30 and continues to be the reigning chess champion.

On December 1st, 2024, following his game with the young Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh, Ding Liren was even asked if he was aware of the 'Ding Chilling' memes circulating the internet, which also have a connection with another meme about ice cream. Liren cluelessly, yet innocently replied that he didn't have any ice cream, which left the entire room in splits, including Gukesh.
