Do you think you're far better than everyone else for no reason other than that you might have a better physique because you're a gym bro? Or maybe you have a toxic and unhealthy relationship with masculinity...

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be a Chad. What is that, you may ask? Chad is a figure that is pretty popular in meme culture, though per the Daily Dot, it originated long before the internet was a thing. According to Dictionary.com, Chad can be defined:

"Chad is a usually disparaging internet slang term used for a popular, confident, sexually active young white male. Its female counterpart is Stacy, who is often portrayed as Chad's sexual partner. Use of Chad is associated with the incel community and the website 4chan to refer to stereotypical alpha males."

Per the Daily Dot, the first use of Chad as an insult can be traced back to 2005, when it was used as an alternative to "rubbish or unworthy." In modern-day, however, Chad is often used interchangeably with GigaChad, Chad to out-Chad all Chads, the Alpha Male of the Alpha Males, and massive Chad.

As for exactly what it means nowadays, Technology.org claims it's used to mock a man who thinks himself manly or better than others. However, it could also be used as a compliment for someone who has a stereotypical good-looking manly body, complete with muscles and a six-pack. Double points if he goes to the gym.

The Chad meme can also be used in the cryptocurrency world, where it refers to someone who's doing well in the market. However, it is more commonly associated with someone who regularly invests in cryptocurrency with zero or next to zero value and utility. Funnily enough, Chad can also be used on women in this world, as it is gender-neutral.

As for when it first emerged as a meme, the outlet claims it first took root back in 2017 on Instagram, back when 4Chan popularized a photo of a male model named Ernest Khalimov posing shirtless.

With a sharp square jawline and visibly manly features, a photoshopped version of the image quickly went viral, and 4Chan users began dubbing it “gigachad” or “the perfect human specimen destined to lead us against the reptilians.”

The image has since been doing the rounds online, though various new edits have spawned over the years, including an extremely photoshopped version, and even a cartoonised version. For better context, we've rounded up some of the funniest memes we found online:
